Released by Capcom in 1984, 1942 is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The player controls a fighter aircraft known as the "Super Ace," with the objective of battling through enemy forces to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. Combat revolves around shooting down waves of enemy planes while evading incoming fire. A distinctive defensive maneuver allows the aircraft to perform a loop-the-loop to escape danger. Power-ups are scattered throughout the game, including one that summons two smaller escort fighters flying in a Tip Tow formation alongside the player's aircraft. Originally an arcade release, the game was later ported to numerous home platforms including the MSX, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, and various Japanese home computers, as well as later digital platforms.
