Released in 2000 by Terminal Reality, 4x4 EVO is an off-road racing game for PC (Windows), Mac, Dreamcast, and PlayStation 2 that puts players behind the wheel of licensed pickup trucks and SUVs from manufacturers including Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Nissan, and Toyota. The game builds directly on the foundation of Terminal Reality's Monster Truck Madness series, adapting that gameplay framework for consumer off-road vehicles rather than monster trucks. A notable feature is cross-platform online multiplayer, which allows up to four players on PC, Mac, and Dreamcast to compete against one another in the same races — an uncommon capability for the era. The PlayStation 2 version does not share this cross-platform connectivity. The combination of real manufacturer licenses and online interoperability between multiple platforms distinguished it within the off-road racing genre at the time of its release.
