Released in 2016 by Petroglyph Games for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, 8-Bit Invaders! is a retro-styled real-time strategy game featuring two opposing factions: the military Galactic Marine Corps and the alien Cranioids. Gameplay centers on classic base-building mechanics — gathering resources, constructing structures, and assembling armies before engaging enemy forces. The single-player offering comprises 24 campaign missions with progression-based technology upgrades and achievements, supplemented by a "Conquer the Multiverse" metagame that opens opportunities to invade additional worlds. Ten cooperative missions allow two players to tackle objectives together, while skirmish mode supports two-to-eight player battles across maps of varying sizes against human or AI opponents at adjustable difficulty levels. Environments are destructible throughout. The game also features cross-play compatibility with 8-Bit Armies and 8-Bit Hordes, enabling large multi-faction battles across titles. The soundtrack was composed by Frank Klepacki. Petroglyph, the studio behind Star Wars: Empire at War and Grey Goo, developed the title with accessibility for both newcomers and veteran RTS players in mind.
