Developed by Project Aces and released in 2004 for PlayStation 2, with a later PlayStation 4 release, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is an aerial combat flight simulator set across a 32-mission main campaign. Players pilot a customizable aircraft with direct control over speed, altitude, direction, cannons, missiles, and special weapons, with mission objectives established through pre-flight briefings. A notable addition to the series is the wingman system, which allows players to issue real-time commands to squadmates mid-flight, enabling coordinated group tactics while giving each wingman a distinct personality. Pilots also face situational yes/no decisions during missions that influence events in the story, which advances between missions through cutscenes. A separate arcade mode shifts focus to Mobius One, the protagonist of Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, as he contends with continuous waves of enemy aircraft.
