Aggelos is a 2D action-RPG developed by Storybird Games and released in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Drawing inspiration from non-linear Japanese classics such as Wonder Boy in Monster World, the game casts players in a struggle to defend the Kingdom of Lumen from an interdimensional invasion. Progression follows a Metroidvania structure, with new abilities and equipment gradually opening access to a sprawling world that includes forests, cave systems, seas, and ancient temples. Combat is melee-focused, with unlockable magical abilities and high-level attacks that can be chained together against groups of enemies and large boss encounters. The game also features side-quests and hidden secrets throughout. Visually, Aggelos commits fully to 16-bit sprite art with detailed character designs and animations, complemented by a retro-style chiptune soundtrack.
