Alleyway is a brick-breaking arcade puzzle game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and released in 1989 for the Game Boy, later made available on the Nintendo 3DS. Players control a spaceship positioned at the bottom of the screen, using it to deflect an energy ball upward into a grid of blocks. The objective is to clear every block in the field before advancing to more difficult stages. The game follows a structure common to the breakout genre, with each cleared layout giving way to increasingly challenging arrangements. Its science-fiction framing sets the action in an interstellar environment, presenting the familiar paddle-and-ball format as a kind of cosmic demolition exercise. As a launch title for the original Game Boy, Alleyway represents an early example of the handheld's puzzle and arcade library.
