Alter Echo is a 2003 action game developed by Outrage Games, released for Xbox and PlayStation 2, blending fighting, puzzle, and adventure elements. Set in a future where interstellar corporations harvest an organic material called Plast to manufacture biomachines, the game follows Nevin, a protagonist with the rare ability to physically manipulate Plast and bend time. When illegal experimentation causes Plast to become infected with human consciousness, Nevin finds himself fighting for survival against a world unraveling around him. Combat centers on a shape-shifting suit that allows players to switch between three distinct modes — Melee, Gun, and Stealth — to handle different enemy encounters. A Time Dilation mechanic lets players pause the action mid-battle to queue up sequences of moves and special attacks, creating bursts of concentrated offense before the fight resumes.
In a world where psychics, known as shapers, can create any object they want with a substance called Plast, the best shaper of all, Paavo, develops a new type of Plast - EchoPlast. The ship of Nevin and his crew is shot down by Paavo and they crashland on his planet. The EchoPlast, having developed a conscience, asks Nevin to stop Paavo from destroying humanity with the EchoPlast's power. The EchoPlast forms a suit for Nevin to help him.
