Astro Fighter is a 1979 arcade shooter developed by Data East Corporation in which the player pilots a craft through repeating cycles of combat and survival. Each cycle consists of four waves of enemy ships, each presenting a distinct type of attacker, followed by a mandatory refueling stage. The player must destroy all incoming craft while dodging missiles and bombs, then shoot a designated "GS" refueling ship to proceed. The game begins with three lives, and a bonus life is awarded at 5,000 points. Smaller bonuses are earned for shooting six falling bombs consecutively or hitting the GS ship on the first shot. A substantial 10,000-point bonus is available for completing all four waves while firing exactly two shots more than the theoretical minimum — a precise challenge that experienced players deliberately pursue, as it represents the most reliable path to high scores in the game's increasingly difficult upper cycles.
