Astrosmash is a fixed-shooter arcade game developed by Mattel Electronics, released in 1981 for the Intellivision and later made available on PC, Xbox 360, and legacy mobile devices. Players control a laser cannon positioned at the bottom of the screen, tasked with intercepting a continuous barrage of falling objects to accumulate the highest score possible. Meteors are the most frequent threat, arriving in multiple sizes and colors; some break apart into two smaller fragments when hit. Interspersed among the meteors are white spinning bombs that demand immediate attention — missing one costs a life rather than merely deducting points. As difficulty increases, UFOs and guided missiles enter the field, actively targeting the player's cannon. Destroying objects earns points, while allowing meteors to pass lowers the score. The game's escalating challenge and score-based structure give it a classic high-score pursuit dynamic typical of early 1980s arcade design.
The Intellivision game catalog features the exciting caption, "Spin. Blast. And drop into hyperspace to avoid a killer asteroid shower. Power on. Attack computer engaged. Fire a quick burst at the alien antagonists. Got 'em!" The actual package gives a more specific description: "You're in command of a battery of laser guns. You have unlimited ammo and a lot of targets! You can roll up big scores by hitting a spectactular barrage of falling rocks, bombs, guided missiles and attacking UFOs..."
