Backpack Hero is an inventory management roguelike developed by TheJaspel and released in 2023, available on PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and web browser. Rather than focusing solely on which items a player collects, the game emphasizes how those items are physically arranged within a backpack, with spatial placement directly affecting their power and effectiveness. Runs are built around turn-based combat against over 100 enemies and procedurally generated dungeons featuring varied layouts, events, and challenges. A roster of five distinct heroes offers different playstyles, and a pool of over 800 items provides extensive synergy combinations to experiment with. Outside of dungeon runs, a story mode includes town-building mechanics centered on Haversack Hill, where players use gathered resources to construct and expand a hamlet, attracting residents, conducting research, and unlocking additional heroes, quests, and challenges.
