Battlezone, developed by Activision and released in 1998 for PC, is a hybrid action-strategy title that blends first-person tank combat with real-time strategy command. Set against a secret Cold War space race, the game casts players as a military commander operating from inside an anti-gravity vehicle, fighting either as U.S. forces or Soviet troops in a conflict over recovered alien technology across seven distinct planetary and lunar environments. Players pilot one of 25 anti-gravity war machines and access an arsenal of 25 weapons, including mortars, mines, and a device capable of triggering earthquakes on deformable terrain. Strategic responsibilities extend to coordinating over 30 unit types — tanks, infantry, and mobile turrets among them — while managing resources and deploying support directly from the cockpit. If a vehicle is destroyed, the pilot can bail out, parachute clear, and commandeer another unit using a sniper rifle, maintaining battlefield continuity throughout.
