Boulder Dash is a 1984 puzzle-arcade game developed by First Star Software, released on Commodore 64/128/MAX and later made available on Wii. Players control Rockford, a miner navigating underground caves in search of diamonds while avoiding hazards. The core mechanic revolves around digging through dirt to collect a required number of gems before reaching the exit, all while managing the physics of falling boulders that can crush Rockford or be strategically redirected to eliminate enemies. Each cave presents a distinct layout with increasingly complex arrangements of rocks, creatures, and terrain, demanding both quick reflexes and careful planning. The interplay between gravity-driven boulder movement and enemy behavior gives the game its distinctive puzzle character, requiring players to think ahead while acting under time pressure.
