Children of Mana is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix Product Development Division 8 and released for the Nintendo DS in 2006. Set in the world of Fa'diel, the game centers on the island of Illusia, home to the legendary Tree of Mana. Years before the story begins, a catastrophic event known as the "great disaster" occurred near the Mana Tree, claiming many lives but ultimately being stopped by a young boy and girl wielding the Sword of Mana. In the present, a group of orphans — survivors of that tragedy — set out to uncover the truth behind what happened. Their investigation takes them beyond Illusia across Fa'diel's five continents: Jadd, Topple, Wendell, Ishe, and Lorimar. Travel between these regions is accomplished by summoning the creature Flammie using the Flammie Drum, a mechanic that serves as the primary means of intercontinental navigation throughout the adventure.
