Cities XL is a city-building simulation developed by Monte Cristo and released in 2009 for Windows, created by the team behind the City Life series. Players take on the role of mayor, constructing and managing urban environments across large, detailed 3D maps that feature varied terrain types — mountains, canyons, beaches, and islands — set in climates ranging from tropical to desert and Mediterranean to temperate. Terrain and topography directly influence resource availability and city layout decisions. The game includes hundreds of buildings and monuments drawing from American and European architectural traditions. Citizens are modeled with individual profiles reflecting age, education, and wealth, which determines the mix of services, employment, and leisure facilities a city must provide. A sophisticated transport system allows players to configure traffic lanes and build bridges and tunnels. The in-game economy responds dynamically to price fluctuations and shifting citizen demands.
