Cobalt Core is a sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder developed by Rocket Rat Games and released in 2023 for PC and Nintendo Switch. Combat takes place along a single axis, where ships slide left and right to dodge incoming fire, align cannons for optimal shots, and target enemy weak points. Players issue commands by playing cards each turn, choosing between raising shields, evading missiles and cannon blasts, or striking first to knock out an opponent's weapons before they fire. Outside of moment-to-moment combat, runs involve assembling a crew of three characters, each with a distinct playstyle and personal storyline, then mixing their card pools across hundreds of possible combinations. Split upgrade paths on individual cards ensure meaningful variation between runs. Daily challenge modes introduce modifiers and competitive leaderboards to extend replayability further. An overarching time-loop narrative gradually unfolds across multiple runs. The soundtrack, exceeding 90 minutes of original music, was composed by Aaron Cherof, known for his work on Minecraft.
