Released in 1996 for PC and DOS, Creatures is a life simulation game set on the surface of a world called Albia. The player exists within this environment as a disembodied presence, represented on screen by a hand-shaped cursor rather than a conventional avatar. Albia is a large, living landscape populated by various strange beings drawn loosely from Northern mythology. The central focus falls on the Norns, small furry creatures whose race has nearly died out — at the start of the game, little remains of their civilization beyond a long-abandoned home and a handful of eggs sitting in a deteriorating incubator. From this precarious starting point, the player works to nurture and sustain the surviving Norns, tending to a species on the edge of extinction within a richly detailed and persistent simulated world.
