Released in 2014 by indie studio Hipster Whale, Crossy Road is an arcade game available on iOS, Android, PC, Windows Phone, Amazon Fire TV, and web browsers. Built around the classic joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?", the game tasks players with guiding a chicken and other unlockable characters across an endless series of roads, rivers, and obstacles. Drawing on the hop-by-hop structure of classic arcade games, it challenges players to advance as far as possible without getting hit by traffic, falling into water, or being left behind by the scrolling screen. The colorful, voxel-style presentation and roster of collectible characters gave the game broad appeal across mobile and desktop platforms. Developed by Andy Sum, Matt Hall, and Ben Weatherall, Crossy Road became a notable example of the endless hopper subgenre following its November 2014 launch.
