Dead or Alive 2 is a 3D arcade fighting game developed by Team NINJA, released in 1999 across Arcade, Dreamcast, and PlayStation 2. The second entry in the Dead or Alive series, it draws structural influence from Virtua Fighter while establishing its own distinct combat identity through a triangular system of blows, throws, and holds that governs every exchange. A prominent stun mechanic allows successful attacks to temporarily prevent opponents from attacking or guarding, enabling chained re-stuns that shift the rhythm of each round. Most strikes carry significant risk, as they can be punished on both hit and block by faster throws. Character weight categories influence juggle behavior, and environmental hazards play a central role — stages feature walls, multi-tiered layouts, and surfaces such as water and ice that modify stun behavior. Falls between stage tiers deal notable damage. CG cutscenes tie fights to an overarching narrative throughout the game's story mode.

After his death, the world began to become chaotic. In the middle of the chaos, it was announced that the second Dead or Alive World Combat Championship will be held. The purpose and significance of the tournament changed after Douglas' death. The promoter of the second Dead or Alive Championship, who is fond of conflicts and jealous of the strong, is responsible for Douglas's death. The new promoter, Victor Donovan, is more than a corrupt mastermind, but a man of pure evil. His involvement in the tournament began to bring a sense of terror to the world, resulting in the infamous tengu disaster.
