Defcon 5 is a first-person shooter and simulator developed by Millennium Interactive and released in 1995 for DOS, 3DO, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation. The player manages the defense of an underground complex against escalating enemy attacks, balancing time between two core activities: manning exterior gun turrets to repel waves of fighters and exploring the base's labyrinthine corridors in search of access cards. A tram system connects these areas, making movement between them a tactical consideration. Central to the experience is a "Virtual Operating System" through which the player repairs damage, monitors intrusions, and deploys robotic sentries. As additional access keys are recovered, this system becomes increasingly capable, eventually allowing remote or automated turret control. Greater automation frees more time for exploration, pushing toward the ultimate objective: locating the clearance needed to trigger the base's self-destruct sequence, defending an escape shuttle, and evacuating before the facility is destroyed.
