A port of Williams Electronics' 1981 arcade classic, Defender tasks players with piloting a spacecraft to protect humanoids on a planetary surface from relentless waves of alien attackers. Enemy types include Landers, Bombers, Pods, Swarmers, and Baiters, each posing distinct threats. Landers are particularly dangerous — if they successfully abduct humanoids and carry them to the top of the screen, those captives transform into Mutants, aggressive enemies that intensify the challenge considerably. Allowing all humanoids to be destroyed results in the planet's total annihilation. The player's ship carries smart bombs for clearing large groups of enemies and can execute hyperspace jumps to reposition rapidly across the terrain. Released on Xbox Live Arcade in November 2006, this modernized version of the shooter brought the horizontal scrolling, fast-paced gameplay of the original to PC and Xbox 360 audiences.
In the future an alien race known as the "Manti" attacks Earth with their relatives the Irata. Manti have been seen kidnapping humans for unknown reasons but, it is known that after a Manti grabs a human that they become more powerful. If the Manti successfully create the ultimate Mutant Army, then Earth won't stand a chance. Star-Fighters have been dispatched to Defend mankind from the enemy.
