Demon's Souls is a third-person action RPG developed by FromSoftware and released in 2009 for PlayStation 3. Set in the kingdom of Boletaria, the game follows a warrior venturing into a realm consumed by a mysterious fog that has unleashed hordes of lethal demons upon the land. The player works through five distinct regions of the kingdom, hunting arch demons in order to ultimately confront the Old One, the ancient being responsible for the catastrophe. Combat is demanding and unforgiving, placing significant emphasis on careful play and perseverance. Beyond its solo experience, the game incorporates cooperative and competitive multiplayer elements, allowing players to interact with one another across Boletaria's interconnected world. Demon's Souls is widely recognized as a foundational title in the action RPG subgenre defined by its punishing difficulty and methodical gameplay.
Demon's Souls is set in a fictional dark fantasy world, taking part mostly in the southern medieval kingdom of Boletaria, that has been consumed by a thick, mysterious Fog that is creeping ever out to blanket the entire world. The Old One, a colossal immortal flying Demon, has been awoken and with it Demons have come forth to consume the souls of men. Only when The Old One is lulled back to eternal slumber will the fog dissipate and the world be restored.
