Desert Combat is a first-person shooter modification for Battlefield 1942, developed by Trauma Studios — led by Frank Delise, Brian Holinka, and Tim Brophy — and released for PC in 2004. Set during the first Gulf War in Iraq, the mod transplants Battlefield 1942's large-scale multiplayer combat into a modern Middle Eastern theater, replacing the game's World War II setting with contemporary military hardware and desert environments. The project earned recognition as an award-winning mod and gained significant popularity in the period following the 2003 Coalition invasion of Iraq, when public interest in the conflict was high. Desert Combat became one of the most prominent community-built modifications of its era, demonstrating the extent to which player-created content could expand and recontextualize an existing commercial title.
