Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is a tactical RPG developed by Nippon Ichi Software, released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3. A direct sequel to the 2003 PlayStation 2 title Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, the game returns to the same cast of protagonists from that original entry. Core gameplay follows the established Disgaea formula of grid-based tactical combat, while introducing several new systems. Monster Mounting replaces Magichange, the mechanic featured in Disgaea 3 and 4, allowing characters to ride monsters in battle. A relationship system tracks compatibility between characters on a five-point heart scale. The Cheat Shop is another addition, enabling players to redistribute gain rates across various resources — for example, reducing experience acquisition in exchange for boosting the rate at which Hell currency is earned — providing a degree of customization over progression pacing.
