Double Dragon is a beat 'em up arcade game developed by Technos Japan and distributed by Taito in 1987, later made available on Xbox 360. The first entry in the Double Dragon franchise, it follows a player character through four missions — a city slum, a factory, a woodland area, and an enemy hideout — using a three-button control scheme of punch, kick, and jump. These inputs can be combined with joystick movements to execute a range of martial arts techniques, including elbow strikes and hair-grabbing maneuvers. Enemies occasionally carry weapons such as baseball bats, whips, throwing knives, and dynamite, all of which can be disarmed and turned against their owners. A two-player cooperative mode is supported, allowing partners to grab opponents restraining one another, though enemies can exploit the same tactic. Completing the game with two players triggers a final confrontation between them to determine who claims the rescued character Marian.
The player takes control of martial artist Billy Lee, or his twin brother Jimmy (also known as Hammer and Spike in the supplementary materials for the American arcade release), as they fight their way into the turf of the Black Warriors gang in order to rescue their common love interest Marian.
