Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future is a puzzle-adventure game developed by Appaloosa Interactive, released in 2000 for the Dreamcast and later PlayStation 2. Set in the 30th century, it takes place within a civilization where dolphins and humans have coexisted for five centuries, jointly venturing into space as ambassadors of peace. Their shared history is threatened by a hostile alien species called the Foe, who — after being pushed to the edge of defeat in open conflict — turn to a campaign of vengeance against Earth itself. The planet's primary protection is the Guardian, a massive sentient construct of crystalline material capable of generating a forcefield across the entire globe. Persistent Foe suicide attacks probe the field for vulnerabilities, setting the stage for the dolphin protagonist Ecco to navigate underwater environments, solve puzzles, and confront the consequences of this extraterrestrial assault.
In the past an aggressive alien race called The Foe had engaged in armed conflict with the inhabitants of Earth. Back then, they were defeated by the combined force of humans and dolphins working together to repel the invasion. Now, a new war is raging between the two. The Foe have a new objective this time, the destruction of the Guardian, a giant crystal that is the nucleus of the Earth's defence system. The Guardian protects the planet from exterior attacks via a powerful forcefield. However, the Foe somehow find a way to penetrate the barrier and destroy half the Guardian with it. One of the Guardian's shards makes contact with Ecco and informs him that only he can save the planet from destruction.
