Released in May 2003 alongside The Matrix Reloaded, Enter the Matrix is an action title developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Atari for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and PC. The first video game adaptation of the Matrix film series, it combines shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and hack-and-slash gameplay within a story that runs parallel to the events of The Matrix Reloaded. A central feature is more than an hour of original live-action footage directed by the Wachowskis and performed by the film trilogy's cast, produced exclusively for the game. Development proceeded simultaneously with both Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, giving the game a close narrative and production relationship with the broader franchise. The title sold one million copies within its first eighteen days on sale, reaching 2.5 million after six weeks and eventually surpassing five million copies sold worldwide.
The game was written and directed by the Wachowski brothers, and its plot is intertwined with that of the second movie, The Matrix Reloaded. Enter The Matrix casts the player as Niobe or Ghost, captain and first mate of the rebel ship Logos, respectively. Niobe is a master combatant, capable of beating up everyone in her way. She is an excellent pilot, both in the real world and in the Matrix. Ghost is very adept at firearms, and his marksmanship is a mastery. Both characters are very athletic, and throughout the game the player will have to walk, run, jump, strafe, peek, run on walls, climb ladders and pipes, and fight various enemies.
