Espgaluda II is a vertical scrolling manic shooter developed by CAVE Interactive CO, originally released in arcades in 2005 as a sequel to Espgaluda and brought to Nintendo Switch in 2021. The game belongs to the "bullet hell" tradition, in which players navigate dense waves of enemy projectiles while managing offensive firepower. A central mechanic involves a gem-based power system that alters the speed of onscreen bullets, giving players a means of turning overwhelming barrages into manageable patterns. The arcade origins are preserved in the Switch version, maintaining the intense, score-driven structure characteristic of CAVE's catalog. Players choose from a roster of characters, each with distinct shot types and special abilities that affect both survival strategy and scoring potential. The title is aimed primarily at enthusiasts of the arcade shooter genre who value precise, high-difficulty gameplay.
The game takes place in a fictional land called Soma, three years after a massive war known as the Great Shinra War devastated the land and killed most of its plant life. Humanity is forced to pull their efforts together for the sake of survival and reforestation. Using new found technology, an alchemist named Hiodoshi spearheaded a project called Project Espgaluda, which gathered youths and used them as experimental test subjects for artificial armored wings. They were then called Galuda, named after the mythical bird of legend. Ageha and Tateha were two of the subjects who escaped during the project. At the end of Espgaluda, they were reunited with their mother and lived peacefully after going into hiding. Espgaluda II begins when they are discovered.
