Expedition Zero is a survival horror game developed by Enigmatic Machines LTD and released in 2022 for PC. Set in a corrupted northern forest within a sealed anomaly zone, it follows the last survivor of a Soviet scientific expedition attempting to uncover the truth behind a top-secret experiment. Players explore abandoned research facilities and hostile wilderness while contending with a powerful forest monster and other dangerous creatures, which can be confronted directly or avoided. Survival demands managing scarce resources against multiple threats, including extreme cold and snowstorms. Looting and crafting allow players to build devices and upgrade a mecha-suit, improving combat effectiveness and resilience in harsh conditions. Establishing safe points provides limited respite across the expedition. The former research camp, now derelict and enclosed by a towering wall, serves as a central location for piecing together the dark history of the zone.
The unexpected meteorite crash turned the endless Siberian taiga forest into a nightmare exclusion zone. The military bases went into radio silence, and the locals talked about the obscure flesh-eating creatures and devastated villages. The most advanced Soviet scientific team “Expedition Zero” was immediately sent to the zone with state-of-the-art research technology and mechanized protective suits. The signal was lost on day one. Many years later, the lone survivor of the team is still trying to find his way home.
