The episode reframes one of the main game's most pivotal sequences from the perspective of Ignis, Noctis's close companion, as he navigates the devastated city of Altissia following a catastrophic battle. His primary objective is to protect Noctis from the forces of the Niflheim Empire at any cost. Ignis is joined by Ravus, the Empire's high commander, who pursues his own mission to rescue his sister, Lunafreya. The expansion features fast-paced combat and is structured around multiple endings, offering players different outcomes depending on their choices. As a standalone episode, it fills in narrative gaps left by the main game, shedding light on events that unfold largely offscreen in the original story.
