Fossil Fighters: Frontier is a role-playing game developed by Spike Chunsoft for the Nintendo 3DS, released in 2014 as an entry in the Fossil Fighters series. The game introduces a notable addition to the franchise: players now travel across diverse environments in vehicles rather than on foot, using them to explore excavation sites and unearth fossils. Recovered fossils are restored into creatures called Vivosaurs, which are based on real-life dinosaurs. These Vivosaurs serve as the core of the gameplay loop — once revived, they can be deployed in battles against wild Vivosaurs encountered during digging expeditions. The combination of vehicular exploration, fossil excavation, and creature combat forms the foundation of the experience, building on the mechanics established in earlier installments of the series while expanding the scope of how players navigate and interact with the game world.
