Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a third-person shooter developed by Cavia and released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, based on the anime series of the same name. Players take on the roles of characters including Major Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, and Tachikoma across single-player missions and multiplayer combat supporting up to four players. The single-player campaign incorporates a range of tactical mechanics beyond direct combat, such as hacking into machines and computers and taking remote control of enemies' minds. A varied arsenal is available throughout. Completing the Story mode unlocks additional playable characters, alternate costumes, and new weapons, extending the game's content beyond the main campaign. The combination of action-oriented gunplay with light hacking and mind-control mechanics gives the game a degree of variety consistent with the source material's themes.
The games take place in the year 2030, between the stories told in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG. In the year 2030, cybercrime, espionage and terrorism plague a society lost between humanity and technology. As one of the trusted members of the government organization known as Section 9, Major Motoko Kusanagi must uncover the truth behind a mysterious case known only as T.A.R.
