Gradius V is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Treasure and published by Konami, released in 2004 for PlayStation 2 and later made available on PlayStation 3 as a PS2 Classic. The fifth installment in the long-running Gradius series, it preserves the franchise's foundational mechanics — navigating a spacecraft through enemy-filled stages, collecting power-up capsules to upgrade weapons, and avoiding both projectiles and collision damage — while introducing a meaningful tactical addition. Players can now aim the "Options," the yellow support pods that shadow the player's ship, in any direction using the analog stick. The trade-off is significant: repositioning the Options leaves the ship stationary and temporarily vulnerable, introducing a layer of risk management absent from earlier entries. The PlayStation 3 version has since been delisted and is no longer available for purchase through official channels.
