Gruntz is a 1999 puzzle-strategy hybrid from Monolith Productions, released for PC. Players oversee a group of small creatures called Gruntz who have been stranded in an unfamiliar world after escaping through a wormhole to flee their hostile cousins, the Disgruntled. The goal of the single-player campaign, titled Questz, is to collect all 36 pieces of a warpstone — four per level across eight distinct worlds — and deliver each piece to the Gruntz king on that stage. Gameplay involves navigating Gruntz across tile-based maps, picking up items, triggering switches, and defeating enemy Disgruntledz. The balance between logic-based puzzle solving and light tactical combat gives the game its dual identity, with environmental obstacles and switch sequences forming the core of most challenges while combat provides additional pressure throughout each level.
