Headlander is a side-scrolling action-adventure game from Double Fine Productions, released in 2016. The player controls the last surviving human—reduced to a disembodied head sealed in a special helmet—navigating a hostile, machine-dominated world. The helmet can detach and dock into robotic host bodies, letting the head commandeer different machines to fight, solve puzzles, and progress. Its retro-futuristic setting draws on 1970s science fiction: a supposed utopia in which humanity has uploaded its minds into manufactured robot bodies, all overseen by an unstable central computer. As the head moves from host to host, it uncovers that the world is not what it seems and that humanity's fate remains unsettled. Developed by the studio behind Psychonauts and Broken Age and published with Adult Swim Games, it blends shooting, platforming, and exploration. It is available on Windows, Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
