Hearts of Iron is a grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio and released in 2002 for PC. The first entry in the long-running series, it covers World War II on a global scale, with a map spanning the entire world and the option to control any nation within it. While players are free to engage on whichever front they choose, the game centers on the ideological conflict between the era's dominant political orders — Fascism, Communism, and Democracy — and the great alliances that formed around them. As one of the earliest PC titles to approach the Second World War at true grand strategic scope, it tasks players with managing the military, political, and economic dimensions of a nation across the full sweep of the conflict.
