For the Motherland is the first expansion to Hearts of Iron III, the World War II grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio, released for PC in 2011. Players take command of any nation in the conflict across a timeframe spanning 1936 to 1948, managing the war effort at multiple levels — from individual divisions up to entire nations — with the option to delegate lower-level decisions as needed. The expansion introduces a revised war goals system that allows each faction member to stake territorial claims when peace is enforced, alongside a new partisan mechanic that lets players build underground resistance networks and contest ideological rivals for control of occupied territories. Additional changes include the ability to seize strategic resources, an improved theatre interface for clearer strategic oversight, reworked internal politics with a coup system, and the return of battle scenarios offering self-contained mini-campaigns.
