Heroes of Ruin is an action role-playing game developed by n-Space for the Nintendo 3DS, released in 2012. Players battle through dungeons and collect gear while taking advantage of several connectivity features built around the handheld's hardware. The game's StreetPass integration powers an in-game Traders' Network, through which players can buy and sell rare items gathered from encounters — inventory that refreshes automatically based on other 3DS owners encountered in passing. SpotPass support extends the experience further by delivering rare items and unique challenges via local Wi-Fi hotspots. An accompanying community website offered daily quests and challenges that carried over into the game itself, and included social features allowing players to connect, trade items, and organize cooperative sessions. These layered online and local connectivity systems placed particular emphasis on community interaction as a means of strengthening characters and expanding available equipment.
