Icewind Dale II is a role-playing game developed by Black Isle Studios and released in 2002 for PC. A sequel set in the Forgotten Realms universe of Dungeons & Dragons, it follows a party of adventurers navigating the frozen region of Icewind Dale against an encroaching evil. The game runs on an enhanced version of the Infinity Engine, featuring improved graphics and a more accessible interface, and adopts 3rd Edition D&D rules, which broaden character creation through additional races and classes. Combat operates in real-time with a pause function, enabling tactical control over party engagements. Compared to its predecessor, the game expands on character interactions and side quests while retaining the series' emphasis on combat and dungeon exploration. Narrative threads involving invasion, betrayal, and ancient magic run throughout the campaign, complementing the game's intricate dungeon design and demanding encounter structure.
The game begins as the player's group of mercenaries arrives by ship to defend Targos. They report to the town palisade and fend off an assault by the goblin army.
