Ikaruga is a vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up developed by Treasure, originally released in arcades in 2002 and later ported to platforms including Dreamcast, GameCube, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and PC. The central mechanic revolves around a polarity system: the player's ship can toggle between two states — white and black — which determines how it interacts with enemies and their projectiles. Enemies of the opposite polarity are destroyed more easily, while bullets matching the ship's current polarity are absorbed to charge a missile gauge rather than causing damage. Bullets of the opposing polarity, however, are lethal. Fallen enemies drop polarized point pickups, adding a strategic layer to movement and positioning. Multiple difficulty settings alter how these polarized points behave. The game is widely regarded as demanding across all difficulty levels, with its mechanics rewarding repeated play and deep pattern memorization.
