Jet Set Willy is a flip-screen platformer developed by Software Projects and released in 1984 across a wide range of home computers, including the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, BBC Microcomputer, Atari 8-bit, MSX, and several others. Players control Willy, a character navigating the many rooms of his sprawling mansion with the goal of collecting scattered objects throughout. The game distinguishes itself from its predecessor by allowing open exploration rather than confining the player to a linear, screen-by-screen progression — rooms can be visited in any order, giving the mansion a largely nonlinear structure. Each screen presents its own arrangement of platforms, hazards, and collectibles, and movement between rooms triggers an immediate transition to the adjacent area. The combination of arcade-style platforming with broad exploratory freedom was a defining characteristic of the title.
A tired Miner Willy has to tidy up all the items left around his house after a huge party. With this done, his housekeeper Maria will let him go to bed. Willy's mansion was bought with the wealth obtained from his adventures in Manic Miner, but much of it remains unexplored and it appears to be full of strange creatures, possibly a result of the previous (missing) owner's experiments. Willy must explore the enormous mansion and its grounds (including a beach and a yacht) to fully tidy up the house so he can get some much-needed sleep.
