Kill Strain is a top-down competitive twin-stick shooter developed by SIE San Diego Studio and released in 2016 for PlayStation 4. Its central mechanic is an asymmetric 5v5v2 format in which three teams compete simultaneously. Two squads of five human players fight to contain and control a powerful energy source known as The Strain, discovered within remote research facilities. A separate two-player team takes on mutant roles, using enhanced abilities gained through contact with The Strain to sabotage the human factions, spread the infection across the map, and convert fallen humans into additional mutants. This conversion system allows the mutant side to grow in strength over the course of a match, creating a shifting balance of power. The three-way competitive structure distinguishes Kill Strain from conventional team-based shooters, building tension around both human-versus-human conflict and the escalating mutant threat.
