La-Mulana is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure platformer developed by GR3 Project and first released in Japan for Microsoft Windows in 2005. Drawing heavy inspiration from MSX-era games, it presents its visuals and interface in a style that evokes that classic home computer aesthetic. The gameplay is broadly comparable to the Metroid series, combining exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving in an interconnected environment. Originally released exclusively in Japanese, the game was later made accessible to Western audiences through an English fan translation patch produced by Ian Kelley of AGTP. La-Mulana sits within the action-adventure and platformer traditions, emphasizing discovery and challenge across its ruins-set world, and stands as a notable independent production that preceded wider recognition of the so-called Metroidvania subgenre among PC indie titles.
The protagonist of the game is Lemeza, a whip wielding adventurer similar to Indiana Jones exploring the tomb within La-Mulana. Although there is only one ending in the game there are many ways to get there, in that completing objectives in the game (gaining power ups and reaching new areas) is not linear, nor is there an obvious recommended path to take. Many powerups will allow you to reach new areas (similar to Super Metroid), but the game gives no indication of where to go.
