Developed by Sega Sports R&D and released in 2016 for Wii U, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is the fifth entry in the crossover sports series uniting characters from Nintendo's Mario franchise and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. Officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee, the game is set against the backdrop of the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The roster expands with twenty new characters — ten drawn from each franchise — bringing together a broad cast of familiar faces for competitive play. Two sports disciplines, Golf and Rugby, make their debut in the series alongside the events carried over from previous installments. Players compete across these Olympic disciplines using the Wii U's controls in a party-oriented sports format aimed at fans of both series.
