MechAssault: Phantom War is a third-person mech shooter developed by Backbone Entertainment, released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. Part of the long-running MechWarrior series and set within the BattleTech universe originally created by FASA, the game casts players as a BattleMech pilot navigating three-dimensional combat environments. The DS hardware is put to deliberate use: the top screen presents the action from a third-person perspective, while the touch screen renders the interior of the mech's cockpit and serves as the primary control interface. This dual-screen setup ties the physical act of piloting to the lower display, creating a functional separation between the battlefield view and the instrumentation used to operate the machine. The title brings the large-scale mechanical warfare the MechAssault series is known for to handheld form.
