Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is an expanded edition of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and released in 2002 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC. The core tactical espionage game follows Solid Snake as he works to recover a stolen Metal Gear Ray from a terrorist organization. Beyond the original campaign, Substance adds a substantial library of 200 VR missions that substantially broaden the experience. These missions cover a wide range of objectives, including eliminating specific targets, using designated weapons, and completing tasks through first-person targeting modes. A variety mode introduces unconventional characters and scenarios, while a separate set of alternative missions presents challenges such as covert photography, bomb disposal, and large-scale combat. The result is a significantly more content-rich package than the original release.
