Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is an expanded re-release of Metal Gear Solid 3, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan for the PlayStation 2 and published in 2005. It belongs to the series' established tradition of enhanced international editions. The primary addition over the original release is Metal Gear Online, a dedicated multiplayer component featuring five tournament-style modes for up to eight players. Participants control generic soldiers rather than named characters and compete across modes that include deathmatch variants and capture-the-flag formats. The multiplayer draws directly from the main game's setting, incorporating its stages, items, tactical maneuvers, and military factions — among them the KGB, GRU, and Ocelot Unit. The tactical shooter and adventure elements of the base game otherwise remain intact in this edition.
