Minecraft: Java Edition, developed by Mojang Studios and released in 2011 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, is a sandbox simulator and adventure game built around a procedurally generated world composed of one-cubic-meter blocks. Players gather resources, mine for ore, craft tools and new blocks, and build structures ranging from simple shelters to elaborate creations. The environment is populated with plants, animals, and hostile mobs that must be contended with during exploration. Notable mechanics include redstone circuitry capable of powering logic systems and remote devices, as well as minecart rail networks. Beyond the overworld, players can access a dangerous dimension called the Nether and, optionally, pursue an endgame objective in a separate realm known as the End, where the ender dragon serves as a final challenge. Both single-player maps and multiplayer servers are supported.
Minecraft: Java Edition (previously known as Minecraft) is the original version of Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Notch began development on May 10, 2009, publicly releasing Minecraft on May 17, 2009. The full release of the game was on November 18, 2011, at MINECON 2011.
