Missile Command is a 1980 arcade shooter developed by Atari, also released for the Commodore C64/128/MAX and Atari ST/STE. The player controls a regional commander responsible for three anti-missile batteries tasked with protecting six cities from a relentless bombardment of ballistic missiles. Incoming projectiles arrive in ever-increasing waves, and some split into multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, demanding quick and precise targeting. As the game progresses, additional threats emerge: smart bombs capable of evading imprecisely aimed interceptors, as well as bomber aircraft and satellites that traverse the screen while launching their own volleys. The core challenge lies in managing limited ammunition across three batteries while prioritizing targets to prevent the cities from being obliterated. There are no victory conditions — the assault continues until all six cities are destroyed, making survival and high scoring the primary objectives.
