Murder by Numbers is a puzzle-visual novel hybrid developed by Mediatonic, released in 2020 for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia. Set in Los Angeles in 1996, the game follows Honor Mizrahi, a television actress who becomes the prime suspect when her recently-fired boss turns up dead. She partners with SCOUT, a discarded reconnaissance robot with a murky past, to investigate a series of murders across locations including TV studios, award ceremonies, and drag clubs. Gameplay centers on solving nonogram-style pixel puzzles to uncover evidence, then using those clues to interrogate a cast of eccentric characters designed by Hatoful Boyfriend creator Hato Moa. The original soundtrack was composed by Masakazu Sugimori, known for his work on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, and Viewtiful Joe. The game blends 1990s aesthetic sensibilities with a lighthearted tone and an underlying conspiracy narrative.
