Mythos: The Beginning is a survival horror RPG developed for PC, set in London in 1934 and drawing heavily from the pulp horror fiction and monster films of that era. The player creates a paranormal investigator from the ground up, selecting gender, background, and profession before guiding the character through Harborough Asylum, a notorious location where three university students have disappeared during a scientific survey. The asylum conceals genuinely dangerous, Lovecraftian threats, and survival is far from guaranteed. The game blends classic survival horror atmosphere with tabletop RPG mechanics, replacing traditional level-based progression with a system in which experience points are spent directly on stats and skills. Combat is entirely optional; non-combat abilities such as Persuade and Occult Lore offer alternative paths through encounters. Dialogue trees and dice rolls reinforce the pen-and-paper inspiration. Multiple endings reflect the choices made throughout. The Director's Cut edition integrates the Edge of Madness expansion and includes rebalanced mechanics, new dialogue, and additional content.
